When I began work with academics from Classics and Ancient History, we knew that Rome wasn’t built in a day and many of the associated archeological sites were difficult to research online. Inspired by other online resources devoted to the ancient world such as, Packard Humanities Institute Latin Texts Online and Tufts University’s Perseus, we embarked on a collaborative project to develop a global resource on Early Rome in response to student feedback.
Undergraduate students wrote a detailed description of an assigned topic pertinent to Early Roman history and a substantial research bibliography as part of their assessment. Once submitted, these entries were made accessible to the rest of the students in the course as exemplars or for general revision. Each year that the course is run, new topics are added to create an ever-expanding, reviewed, online resource which students have an ownership of. The website can be accessed by UoA students and teachers for now.
